Homemade Apple Chips everyone in the family will love! I was making these in the fall and they are also great for the holidays.
Here's how to make your own healthy apple chips:
First use a small amount of olive oil to lightly grease your pans. Smear it around evenly with your finger tips. If you don't use the oil the apples will NOT come off. Believe me, I have tried both ways. You can use stone or metal cookie sheets. Both work nicely.
Next, slice up your apples. I use the Pampered Chef slicer. No I am not using the guard. But I do recommend it! (If you cut yourself, you can't say I didn't warn you! :) I rotate the apple around the core. Some pieces will be bigger than others. If you feel they are too big just break them in half. I use red and green apples for variation in flavor.
Lay your apples out flat on each cookie sheet. Do not overlap the chips or it will take them longer to dry. This is only about 4 medium sized apples. Also remember when they dry you have less than you think. So I usually do as many as will fit in my oven.
Now it's time to add the spices. I recommend Cinnamon, Nutmeg and Allspice. I like to use fresh ground cinnamon. Take one larger stick, break it up into thirds and put them into a coffee bean grinder. I saw that on a Food Network cooking show and loved the idea. The coffee grinder works perfect for spices. I also add the nutmeg and allspice so it spins them and blends them all together. You can also add ginger if you choose.
Evenly sprinkle all the apple chips. No sugar is needed as the natural sugars of the apples comes out when backing and adds nicely to the spices.
Place all the apple chips in the oven. Turn your oven down to it's lowest heat. Mine only lowers to 170. This process will take a few hours. Between 3-4 has been what I average. One time, I had to leave the house and I shut the oven off and left them to dry out the rest of the way. They were fine till we got back home.
This is a perfect snack for the family, home parties, and holidays. An man does it make the house smell good. No candles needed! Enjoy.
