Susan G. Komen Race For The Cure

Opening Ceremonies

This past Saturday on September 24, 2011, I completed my first Susan G. Komen Race For The Cure. I had a great team made up of friends, family, church family, and co-workers. We were the "Angie's Angels".

It was amazing to see all the women wearing the pink Survivor shirts. Did you know that 1 in 8 women will be or have been diagnosed with breast cancer? When breast cancer is found early, the five year survival rate is now up to 96%. (Of course, I believe I am living longer than 5 years!!!) Those are just statistics.

5,500 walkers. Here's just a few of them.
There were over 5,500 walkers/runners this year. We walked the 5K and it literally felt like only a few minutes. It did not feel like three miles. We talked, laughed, cried, and bonded about personal life stories. We also handed out cards with my BC story and the Word of God's healing.

A few special Thank You's:
One of my friends had had surgery just days before and we pushed her in a wheel chair because she did not want to miss this event. What a trooper and a true friend. A special thank you to her sister-in-law, another friend of mine, who pushed her the entire way!

Thank you to Digitizing Dreams Photography for joining our team and graciously bringing her camera and apparently taking 259 pictures!!! Love you my friend.

A special shout out to Gym Gems and Walmart #1791 of Fremont, MI for your business donations as well.

I raised $1,335.00 for the cause. Thank you to so many friends/family/co-workers for making my $1,000 goal attainable.

I am looking forward to next year. We have many ideas on clothing choices, costumes, and how to have more fun than we did this year. If that is even possible!

One thing I will promise you (to keep me accountable), is that I am running next year. Yup, gonna be at the front of the pack. The overall winner this year, for the men's timed race, was just over 16 minutes. That's crazy. Congratulations to that guy. WOW!

And my final words of appreciation:

End of race day ceremonies.
As many of you know from previous posts, I was chosen as the "Honorary Team New Balance Recipient for 2011". This title I will carry all year close to my heart. I was introduced at the end of the race during the closing ceremonies. I was unaware that I would have to speak but Juliet Dragos (WZZM 13 anchor) told my story and pointed at the microphone. So a few off the cuff words came out. But one of the best memories was when Juliet announced the name of my team "Angie's Angels" and a large cheer came from the croud. I could not have gotten through this summer without my friends/family/God.

From my heart to yours, Angie Christine.
