When dealing with breast cancer, you have moments of up's and down's mentally. My cancer was easily (well, compared to others) removed and taken away from me. But the thought process of not having a part of yourself anymore, comes with a period of mourning. No matter what we deal with whether it be cancer of any kind or another disease, a way to express yourself, calm yourself, and just let go is always a good thing.
You all are well aware I'm sure, I do not believe in all the teachings of Buddha. However, I do believe in finding peace, relaxation and expression of ones self. Those little boxes filled with sand and a rake to sit and clear your mind have always intrigued me. After a surgery while sitting in bed recovering, who can play with a box of sand? So I searched for another relaxing alternative.
I stumbled upon the Buddha Board and found it to be something I could rather enjoy. And the more I looked into it, the more I found it to be something for everyone/age.
So what is a Buddha Board? "Buddha Board is based on the zen concept of living in the moment." There are different styles of boards which you paint on the surface with tap water and watch your art come alive. As the water evaporates your images slowly disappears, giving you a clean slate to start over.
The Original Buddha Board is a slate that sets on a stand. The stand holds the water and your brush, which is made from bamboo. This retails for $32.95. I really like that the Buddha Board is environmentally safe. There is no waste of paper from your scribblings, it only uses water, and the board will last a life time if taken care of.
If you have little ones and want something for them to play with, the Buddha Board store offers a smaller version. The Mini Buddha Board comes in a variety of colors. Black, Red, Pink, and Purple and retail for only $9.95. This is also great for travel.
I received the Lap Top Buddha Board. It's a great color of Hot Pink and the same size as lap top computer. I think this is an awesome way for women with breast cancer (or any woman for that matter) to express themselves, good days and/or bad. Write or draw whatever you want. In angry moments you can draw out something and watch it disappear, just like your anger should. In happy moments, express yourself and relax.
The inside of the board comes with instructions on care and use. When you are done painting you can close it back up and let your drawing fade within the case as well.
You can see here, the Buddha Board in it's flipped position and ready to use. The paintbrush clips into the water tray for storage. You can either fill the tray with water or use a glass. I prefer a cup of water next to me to keep the board nice and dry for when I am done and ready to put it away. But it's a nice feature to have the water easily assessable.
Here is what it looks like wet. The more water you use the darker the image and the longer it will stay. As it starts to fade away you can change your image. So you can draw on it for hours. It's very relaxing and inspires you to just dream and draw. And if you aren't a great artist it just fades away. But the feeling of being an artist does not.
