Is A Gym Right For You?

Is a gym right for you? That's todays question. Let's look at the positives and negatives of a gym membership verses working out at home.

On the positive side, if you like to workout with other's, a gym can be a good motivating experience. I sometimes find myself bored in my home gym, relying solely on myself to push. If you are aware of those around you, a gym atmosphere may encourage you to work harder. Find a partner to spot, so you can lift more than you would on your own. Don't forget to take advantage of those personal trainers. If one or two sessions are included in your gym fee, you don't want those to go to waste. Trainers can teach you proper form and use of equipment and save you from possible injuries. So if a gym is in your budget, use it to it's fullest potential and make sure you go as often as you can.

On the negative side: One has to workout when they are open, the memberships can be very expensive over time, and if you have to take time off you still have to pay. Some gym goers can tend to get wrapped up in the social affair and not give 100%. Have you ever seen two woman side by side on treadmills? They will go slower as they are so involved in the gossip of the week. Reading their magazines and sharing the latest hair styles. Of course, let me just say this isn't depicting everyone. But it does happen and you have to admit you have seen it once or twice before. Some women will worry what they look like at the gym and waste a lot of time in the locker room making sure they look good before even hitting the weights. I confess, this is me at times. But remember, as I have to remind myself, a gym workout is a time for sweat, running makeup (or no makeup), and ponytails. Don't worry what others think when you are there. It's all about how you look after because you chose to go there in the first place.

If a gym membership is not for you or in your budget, another option is buying inexpensive equipment for your home and create your own gym. Don't forget to post on places like Facebook you are looking for used equipment. Most of us have friends and family members with treadmills and weights collecting dust in their basement. Also, check places like ebay or your local newspaper for used equipment. Just look over all the parts and pieces and maker sure they are in working order and it's in good shape. Don't buy faulty equipment which could later cause injury.

With the right pieces of workout equipment, you don't need a lot of space. A huge bonus: your gym is open 24 hours, and you can have all the privacy you need. You won't ever have to worry about your gym clothing. Shoot, you could workout in PJ's if you want to. I know I have.

Trying new sports and activities, which will keep you moving, is always another option. Find a fun sport to do with your family. This will not only help keep you in great shape, without feeling like you went to a gym at all, but teach others around you about good health and better life choices. Quality time with friends and family outside can't be beat.
